“Greetings Grapple Fans” In the 1970s no Saturday afternoon was complete without watching Big Daddy and Giant Haystacks wrestle each other to the ground in front of a hysterical live audience and watched by millions at home.
This is their story.
The award-winning play is being performed at St Georges Church, Barbourne on Friday 3rd October, presented by The Foundry Group. It brings back to grunting, grappling life, the well-loved wrestling rivals and the bizarre world they bestrode. But it is also the story of two brothers – Shirley Crabtree (aka Big Daddy) and his manager and brother, Max.
Brilliantly cast and wonderfully written and directed, the show tells the story outside of the ring with an ‘all-star cast of thousands’ including Paul McCartney, Chris Tarrant, Frank Sinatra, Princess Margaret and Greg Dyke.
It will have you cheering, booing and maybe shedding a tear for those innocent days when great sportsmen wore bizarre leotards, sparkly top hats and the odd mask.
“Executed with gusto…nostalgia wafts from every comical vignette and we willingly submit to the play’s charms…a knockout” – The Metro (four stars)
Doors open with a licensed bar at 7.00pm, the play starting at 7.30. Bring the family, the play is suitable for ages 7+.
